Zwartoxide is een conversielaag (vergelijkbaar met Alodine<\/a>) dat wordt gebruikt voor staal en roestvrij staal. Het wordt voornamelijk gebruikt voor het uiterlijk en voor een lichte corrosieweerstand. Zwartoxide ge\u00efmpregneerd met olie kan de hoogste mate van corrosieweerstand bieden. Zwarte oxide wordt gevormd in een proces dat lijkt op anodiseren, waarbij de onderdelen in verschillende hete baden met chemicali\u00ebn worden gedompeld die het oppervlak van het materiaal omzetten in magnetiet, waardoor de zwarte kleur ontstaat. Zwartoxide heeft geen significante dimensionale impact, daarom is het afplakken van onderdelen niet nodig.
